Joe Pitfield

I am a postdoctoral researcher working with Bjørk Hammer on development and application of machine learning techniques to surface and interface sceince problems.

Before I moved to Denmark and the Aarhus University, I undertook my PhD in Physics from the University of Exeter in the UK, under Dr. Steven Hepplestone. During this time, I gained a wealth of exeprience in the application of ab initio methods, and in devloping methods for predicting atomic structure for computationally challenging systems. Examples of such systems include nanoencapsulated MgO in graphene, TMDC van der Waals heterostructures and alkali metal intercalation. These previous works have allowed me to explore a range of applications,  including battery cathode material exploration and photocatalytic water splitting.

My research here in Aarhus will allow me to utilise and develop the next generation of models in theoretical materials science, namely machine learned potentials. With these methods, the scope of investigation that can be carried out at a comprehensive level is increased by orders of magnitude. I hope to apply such methods to a variety of systems and applications as they become apparent, working closely with experiment to identify such problems.
