Travel to Aarhus

By Plane

The city of Aarhus is most conveniently accessed from Aarhus (AAR) and Billund (BLL) airports (see the map below).

Aarhus Airport (AAR)

  • Aarhus Airport (Tirstrup) is fairly small and has a bus to Aarhus associated with each flight for easy transit to the city. The 925X bus offers a 45 minute ride direct to the centre of Aarhus.
  • Further information regarding Aarhus airport can be found at http://www.aar.dk which gives details (in English and Danish) of flights, the bus service and car rental.

Billund Airport (BLL)

  • Billund Airport is much larger than Aarhus Airport and has arrivals from many European destinations.
  • The bus ride into the centre of Aarhus takes ~1hr and 40 minutes. The bus stops in the centre of the city. Information about Billund Airport can be found at the airport website (in English) and information on the 912x bus serving Aarhus can be found here.

Aalborg Airport (AAL)

  • Aalborg airport is situated just outside the city of Aalborg and lies north of Aarhus.
  • The train journey from Aalborg to Aarhus takes about 1 hr 30 mins. The airport is situated outside Aalborg city but trains leave directly from the airport. Train times and prices can be found by using the Journey Planner on the DSB website.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

Copenhagen Airport is the largest airport in Denmark, with hundreds of flights a day from around the world. To reach Aarhus from this airport you need to either take a connecting flight into Aarhus airport or take a train.

  • By air from Copenhagen to Aarhus: The flight takes only 20 minutes and if your flight into Copenhagen is with one of the Star Alliance airlines you can usually buy the connecting flight to Aarhus included in the ticket.
You will then need to take the airport bus into the centre of Aarhus (see above).
  • By train from Copenhagen to Aarhus: There are direct trains from the airport to the centre of Aarhus which take about 3 hrs 30 mins. (There are other trains which require a change at Copenhagen main railway station). For more information see the train information below.

By Train

DSB is the main train operator in Denmark. Tickets can be booked in advance through their website.

By Car

The E45 motorway travels by Aarhus connecting the city to Aalborg in the North and Germany in the south. The E20 motorway joins the E45 at Fredericia and connects to Copenhagen. Car rental services are offered at all airports in Denmark and we recommend booking car hire before your arrival.

By Ferry

Current timetables for ferries to Zealand (Aarhus-Odden/Aarhus-Kalundborg):

In addition, the Kombardo Express service operates a bus from close to Copenhagen central station to Aarhus bus station which boards the Ferry. The journey time is comparable to taking a train.

By Bus

For long distance bus transfers within Denmark we recommend Flixbus. Coaches operate within Denmark and Germany and are often cheaper alternatives to the train for travel between Copenhagen and Aarhus.

Cycling

Denmark is an ideal country for cycling. There are not many steep hills and there are many safe cycling paths. Urban conditions for cyclists are constantly being improved. Look out for the special cyclists’ routes (cykelruter) and cycle paths (cykelstier).
