His research focuses on the processes that govern the formation of stars and planets, with particular emphasis on the physical and chemical evolution of young stellar systems. Using observations from major international facilities, including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), his group investigates the environments in which planetary systems emerge.
Jes leads several observing programs with ALMA and JWST. Most recently, he serves as Principal Investigator of the ALMA Large Program Complex Organic Molecules in Protostars with ALMA Spectral Surveys (COMPASS), which aims to systematically characterize the complex organic chemistry surrounding young stars on scales relevant to the formation of protoplanetary disks.
Jes earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Leiden University in the Netherlands in 2004. He subsequently held research positions at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the University of Bonn in Germany before returning to the University of Copenhagen as Associate Professor in 2010. He was appointed Professor of Astrophysics at the Niels Bohr Institute in 2021.
