In this colloquium I will answer the question: Is Batman a realistic superhero? Batman is one the few superheroes to not have any superpowers, and must therefore rely on different gadgets to help him defeat the villains. I will go into detail with two of his gadgets: His cape and his gripping grapnel, which he uses to glide through the air and climb buildings, respectively.
I will show examples of Batman using these gadgets from the movies Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and explain the physics behind it using articles, websites, books and the TV-series Mythbusters as sources. The physics I will go through is purely classical mechanics, so students on 1st and 2nd year should be able to follow the reasoning in the colloquium.
I will quickly go through the costs of being Batman, which is also an important factor, when investigating whether or not Batman is a realistic superhero.
