In this colloquium, the focus will be on a very real application of quantum physics in the real world: Quantum communication. Here, classical information bits are exchanged by quantum mechanical systems called Qubits. At first glance, it would seem that anything is possible when utilizing the wonderful quantum-properties of these Qubits.
But what is actually possible, communication wise, when you are able to prepare, send, and measure Qubits? For instance, can you send more than one bit of information with a single Qubit? How can you use Qubits to ensure that no one is eavesdropping your communication? And what is “Quantum teleportation” actually?
This colloquium will answer these and further questions, utilizing basic quantum mechanics, and provide an overview of the current progress of quantum communication technology.
