Did you know that graduate students are six times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the general population?
Academic research is undeniably important for society, but behind its grandeur there is a mental health crisis, including not only graduate students but also post-doctoral fellows, professors and other researchers.
The competitive nature of research funding, coupled with the "publish or perish" culture, has placed immense stress on researchers, having as result high work loads, a poor work-life balance, and uncertainties surrounding finances and job security. This presentation delves into the different factors contributing to this crisis, and explores potential strategies for resolution.
By shedding light on the mental health crisis in science, this presentation aims to contribute to a more sustainable and supportive academic environment, ensuring the well-being of future researchers and the continued success of academic research in the STEM fields.
