Recently, South Korean researchers claimed that a material called LK-99 is a superconductor at ambient pressure and room temperature. If the results are confirmed, LK-99 would be the first material to be superconducting under these conditions!
This claim has brought a lot of attention to the fascinating topic of superconductivity. Superconductors have the unique property of a sudden disappearance of DC electrical resistance and perfect diamagnetism below a critical temperature.
In this colloquium, we will shed some light on the possibility of LK-99 being a breakthrough in room-temperature superconductivity. Therefore, the phenomenology and theories of superconductivity will be discussed, as well as some research results concerning LK-99. Finally, we will have a look at applications of superconductors and the potential that room temperature superconductivity would unlock.
