The ohnosecond is the moment between making a terrible mistake and realizing it. It is the short time before your mind starts to race, thinking about the consequences of the thing you just did. Oftentimes, the ohnosecond occurs after sending a message to the wrong person, or after deleting the wrong file. However, it can also happen in much worse circumstances, such as just after a serious lab accident.

In this colloquium I will cover notorious accidents that have happened in physics laboratories. I will talk about what events lead up to the accidents happening, and what could have been done to avoid or mitigate such accidents. I will also talk about the physics involved in the accidents, such that we can get a better understanding of them. As the accidents we will be discussing all involve radiation, we will first be taking a closer look at how radiation affects the human body, and how we can quantify radiation doses. 

So come by and learn about what happens when you stand next to an ignited atomic bomb, or when you have a close encounter with a beam of high energy protons.
