Abstract:
We discuss the possibility of using the particle-interaction induced nonlinearity to enhance the rotation sensitivity of a single-species BEC in a toroidal trap. We modify the quasi-1D toroidal trap by a weak circular lattice potential that couples modes with opposite orbital angular momenta. The information on rotation is in the populations of the counter-rotating modes. The possible advantage of this setup is small ring size and relatively short operation timescale. Disadvantage lies in the increased sensitivity to total particle number fluctuations.
We describe the system in the mean-field approximation as well as in the two-mode discrete model (second quantization).
