Richard’s research focus lies at the intersection of theoretical solid state and atomic physics. He is particularly fascinated by the universality of physical phenomena. Together with his group he investigates how this underlying simplicity of physics allows one to discover new phenomena in the controlled environment of ultracold quantum gases which can then be implemented and utilized in everyday materials such as semiconductors and other solid state systems.

Richard studied physics at Heidelberg University in Germany and the University of New Mexico in the USA. He obtained his PhD degree from the Technical University Munich in 2013 after which he received the prestigious three-year postdoctoral fellowship of the Institute of Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics at Harvard University. Shortly after moving to ETH Zurich as Pauli-Center Fellow in 2017, Richard was awarded a grant by the Max Planck Society to set up an Independent Max Planck Research Group which he established in 2018 at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich.

Richard was born in Trier, Germany, and lives now in Højbjerg together with his wife Sarah, his two-year old daughter Ella and his four-months old son Jakob.

A date for when our new associate professor will make his inaugural lecture will be announced.
