In some branches of linguistics, particularly generative linguistics, native speakers’ intuitive judgements about sentences are commonly used as evidence for or against proposed theories. Contrary to the discipline of philosophy, which also has a strong tradition of using intuitions as evidence, there has not been much debate within linguistics about why the evidential use of intuitions is justified. The aim of my project is to find out what the majority view on this question is inside (generative) linguistics. In the talk, I present this ongoing work. I will describe this question as a problem within the philosophy of linguistics, present my progress in the project, and give a tentative sketch of my own position on the matter.
