Lead: University of Copenhagen (Niels Bohr Institute) and Aarhus University
Aim: To build and strengthen Danish technical capacity for the design, construction, and testing of advanced calorimeters, with a focus on ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) and a long-term goal of a leading role in the development of the luminosity calorimeter, LumiCal, for the Future Circular Collider (FCC)
Key activities:
- Construction, assembly, and testing of detector modules for ALICE FoCal-E
- High-precision mechanical design, including machining of tungsten plates, in collaboration with industry
- Design and prototyping of a calorimeter for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) with tests at CERN planned for 2029–2030
- Design studies to optimise LumiCal for FCC
- Evaluation of full-wafer silicon sensor technologies in collaboration with DTU Nanolab
- Addressing key design challenges such as mechanical stability, sensor placement, compact electronics, cooling, and in-situ monitoring
