Abstract

If diversity is epistemically beneficial, what are its epistemic benefits? I answer this question by analyzing both positive and negative ways of conceptualizing the epistemic benefits of diversity. I argue that current understanding of the epistemic benefits of diversity should be developed further by integrating a perspective from institutional epistemology. Institutional epistemology highlights three aspects that deserve more attention than they have received so far. First, attempts to promote diversity because of its epistemic potential should not ignore concerns about social justice. Second, to be effective such attempts need to attend to the distribution of burdens and professional benefits. Third, to avoid unintended negative consequences such attempts should be informed about how relations of power shape interactions in scientific communities.

Coffee, tea, cakes and fruit will be served before the colloquium @ 2 pm.

The colloquium is a hybrid event. If you want to attend on Zoom, please write khn@css.au.dk for the link.
