Abstract:
The primary step of every known form of animal vision is absorption of a photon by the retinal chrompore which causes an isomerization. In recent years a technique based on two stages of ion mobility spectroscopy (IMS-IMS) is emerging which allows one to measure isomerizations directly and determine internal energy barriers. We will present studies of thermal isomerizations of the retinal chrompore using IMS-IMS and their implications for understanding the role of Rhodopsin proteins in tuning the chromphores properties.
