For the past eight years, I have conducted research on Concentrating Photovoltaics (CPV) at the Solar Energy Institute of the Technical University of Madrid where I also obtained my Ph.D. in 2014.

CPV systems take advantage of high-efficiency multijunction (MJ) solar cells based on III-V semiconductors to convert the solar spectrum more effectively and achieve efficiency values that almost double that of conventional silicon PV panels. To counteract the higher cost of MJ devices, light is concentrated several hundred times by optical systems composed of lenses or mirrors. The design of CPV systems aim at achieving high efficiency not only under standard conditions but also attaining such a wide tolerance to assembly errors, tracking, temperature and spectral variations, that the energy generated by them throughout the year is maximized.

During my Ph.D. and postdoc, I have been involved in several multidisciplinary investigations related to CPV that will be introduced in the talk and which include non-imaging optical designs, antireflective coating design and manufacturing, analysis of spectral variability as well as optical and electrical characterization of MJ solar cells, concentrating optics and CPV systems.
