Have you ever wondered how seemingly untroubled climbers are able to scale their obstacles in ways that seem to almost defy gravity through clever use of friction and grip? This colloquium will seek to understand what considerations a climber must make when facing a given problem within the world of bouldering and free climbing. We will first seek to evaluate the stability of a climber from a theoretical standpoint, thereby developing a model to evaluate the stability of a given situation that a climber may face. Furthermore, a more applicable approach to the average climber will be taken by evaluating the basic considerations that may be pondered before undertaking a specific challenge. Throughout this colloquium we will come to realize how a seemingly simple balance between gravity and friction can lead to complications when applying it to a real-world situation, and how the individual may utilize these to overcome the challenge and ascend.
