Prior to exoplanets, planet formation was believed to create close-in rocky planets and far-out gas giants. Since 1995 many 'hot Jupiters' have been detected. These are giant planets orbiting very close to their host stars and whose existence contradicts planet formation. Here I will discuss theories which aim at consolidating observations and theory. In particlar I will focus on theories which invoke planetdisk interactions to explain the observed planet populations. I discuss the successes and challenges of these theories.
