Student Colloquium, Christoffer Kobberholm Vejlby: The Pistol Shrimp
Supervisor: Steen Brøndsted Nielsen
This colloquium will focus on the pistol shrimp, specifically the physics behind the cavitation bubble appearing, the dynamics of the cavitation bubble and the eventual collapse. A short review of a bubble in equilibrium is given and the surface tension is discussed. The Rayleigh-Plesset Equation is then derived, and from this expression the maximum temperature and pressure within the bubble during collapse with corresponding estimates are given. More realistic estimates with more complicated assumptions are also given. Finally, a short look into the other areas where cavitation bubbles occur is given.
