Student Colloquium - Mikkel Elkjær Pedersen: The Quantum Era and The Climate Crisis
Supervisor: Jacob Sherson
In 2015 all of the United Nations Members States adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a key part of The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 Goals constitute a common framework for achieving prosperity and peace and acts as a central guideline for global development strategies.
In this colloquium I will address the rapidly evolving field of quantum computing and discuss several areas of impact expected from the emerging technology. I will do so from a standing point of the SDGs and sketch out why quantum computing is predicted to be such a ground breaking component in the quest of solutions to today’s most pressing challenges. This includes in particular climate action and clean energy. Lastly, I will touch on the present status of the quantum computing industry, the challenges ahead and the projected timeline of when we will truly enter the quantum era.
