Halo nuclei exist as unstable entities with a significant proportion of their valence nucleon(s) wave function(s) extending far into the classically disallowed region. Thus they are a purely quantum mechanical phenomenon recognizable by nuclei possessing relatively large spatial extension and cluster structure. The conditions surrounding their emergence are described and contrasted to descriptions in terms of bulk properties. Either neutrons or protons may comprise a halo, both cases are considered with staples of halo structure and differences between the two aforementioned cases being described primarily in terms of results from the application of some of the experimental probes available for the study of such structures.
