SAC Seminar - JJ Hermes: Galactic archaeology and asteroseismology of white dwarf stars

Abstract:
The Gaia mission has opened our eyes wide to white dwarfs, the final stages of stellar evolution for all low- and intermediate-mass stars. The Gaia color-magnitude diagram has revealed hundreds of thousands of new white dwarfs, which has immediately expanded our sample of these objects that can be studied using asteroseismology from space-based missions like Kepler and now TESS. I will explore the latest observations, including 20-second TESS photometry, and discuss our ongoing efforts to understand and characterize fossils in the nearby stellar graveyard
