George Angelou will be visiting us from Garching on September 16-21.
He will give the following SAC Seminar in room 1520-516:

Date: 17 September, 2:15pm

Title: How do lithium rich giants form?

Abstract: Theoretical models of stellar evolution predict that most of the lithium inside a star is destroyed as the star becomes a red giant. However, observations reveal that about 1% of red giants are peculiarly rich in lithium, often exceeding the amount in the interstellar medium or predicted from the Big Bang. Here we report the discovery of 2,330 low-mass (1 − 3M) lithium-rich giant stars, which we show are consistent with internal lithium production. We rule out most formation channels leaving tidal spin-up from a binary companion as the likely mechanism. Our sample reveals that most lithium-rich giants have helium-burning cores and that the frequency of lithium-rich giants rises with increasing stellar metallicity.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Best regards,
