Title:

“Phyneering” of Complex Networks

Abstract:

Over the last two decades the science of complex networks has developed into an interdisciplinary field that combines ideas from mathematics, physics, biology, computer science, social science, and many other areas. It studies the structure, dynamics and function of a wide variety of networked systems, such as for example computer networks, biological networks, and social networks, and has discovered universal organizational principles between them. A new branch in the field is “Phyneering”, the PHYsics-inspired engiNEERING of large complex technical infrastructure networks. Methods and intuition from physics are applied to obtain a fundamental understanding and a higher performance of such systems. Several examples will be highlighted, amongst them are communication networks like the Internet, and renewable energy networks with some special focus on the decarbonization of our energy system.
