Title: Near-Earth Asteroids: A Preventable Natural Disaster
Abstract: Writers of movies, TV shows, and books have imagined what it would be like ifan asteroid was headed towards our planet. Would there be anything we could do to stop it, or would we have to accept our fate?
In this talk I'll share the science behind near-Earth asteroids, including howNASA's DART mission changed an asteroid's orbit, previous Earth impacts, and how teams of scientists search the sky to find asteroids every night. I'll alsodiscuss my research, which uses machine learning to search terabytes of archivedimages for asteroids.
