The Photonics group of the Institute of Microwaves and Photonics (LHFT) is working in several fields ranging from fiber optical communication systems over fiber lasers or optical and fiber sensing to medical applications of photonics. The talk will first give a rough overview on our activities including mitigation of nonlinear distortions in high capacity optical transmission systems, Raman fiber lasers, laser diode absorption spectroscopy and a non mydriatic fundus camera for ophthalmology. More details will be given on our activities in the field of fiber Bragg gratings and modal interference in few mode fibers for improved sensing e.g. of strain and temperature.
