The European Spallation Source: Bringing The World's Intensity Frontier of Accelerators and Pulsed Neutron Sources to Scandinavia
By the end of the decade, the world's most intense spallation neutron source will be completed in Lund, Sweden. The European Spallation Source (ESS) will deliver a record-setting flux of cold neutrons. Being co-host together with Sweden, Denmark will make a considerable financial contribution, 1/8 of the close to 2 billion euro project. What are the potential "Higgs" of the ESS that justifies the investment? Some possible experiments and techniques will be briefly discussed.
The facility will consists of a 360 m linear (partially superconducting) proton accelerator, a spallation target, and neutron beam lines. With an unprecedented average proton beam power of 5 MW, the facility's design is facing many technical challenges that call for novel ideas and state of the art solutions. One example is a sophisticated system for reducing the beam intensity on the spallation target.
ISA, Aarhus University is responsible for the design of a considerable part of the accelerator, and some of the local contributions to the project will be highlighted.
