Abstract

In June this year we published the book Minutter i midnat – en global historie om kernevåben [Minutes to midnight – a global history of nuclear weapons]. Our aim with the book is to address and inform Danish readers on a pivotal issue which for decades has been pushed to the margins of public and political debate. In our talk we will elaborate on our strategy and aims by highlighting four themes central to the book and to our present moment of nuclear crisis. 1): The engagements of scientists through history with the ethical dilemmas posed by nuclear weapons. 2): The problem of nuclear proliferation and the attempts to contain it. 3): Nuclear weapons and climate change as connected existential threats. 4): The impact of the war in Ukraine on nuclear security dilemmas.

Coffee, tea, cakes and fruit will be served before the colloquium @ 2 pm.
