Title:
Investigating the dynamics of quantum impurities immersed in potassium Bose-Einstein condensates

Abstract:
In this talk, I will discuss the experimental investigation of non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a bosonic environment, i.e. a Bose-Einstein condensate. By use of a Feshbach resonance, we are able to tune the interaction strength between the impurity and the condensate/medium state. Until now the dynamics of impurities in the regime, where the interaction between impurity and medium is attractive, has been mapped out in great detail. However, in recent and ongoing work, we are investigating the dynamics of impurities in the repulsive regime, where we observe interesting new behavior, presumably due to a different energy landscape.

I will explain the Ramsey-like interferometric technique used to probe the dynamics of the impurity. This will be followed by a discussion of previously published results of the attractive impurity dynamics. Finally, I will present our latest results on the repulsive impurity dynamics and discuss our preliminary analysis of these data.
