Title: Trapped ion meets ultracold atoms
Abstract:
The long-range atom-ion interaction motivates combining the well controllable platforms of ultracold atoms and trapped ions for impurity physics and quantum simulation. In this talk, I like to share results from the Li-Yb+ experiment in Amsterdam where an ultracold buffer gas is used to cool a single ion to sub-Doppler temperatures. The resulting atom-ion mixture is at the edge of the quantum regime and we observe non-classical behavior in the collisions. In another experiment we study chemical reactions between a single ion and ultracold molecules and we use a single ion as a sensor to detect about 50 molecules in a gas of 10000 atoms.
