Title: Quantum phenomena violating the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis
Abstract: Generic isolated quantum systems are accurately described by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). It states that any subsystem experiences the remaining system as an effective reservoir and hence is well-described by conventional methods from statistical mechanics. Interestingly, several mechanisms are known to violate ETH causing very exotic behavior such as subsystems retaining memory of the initial state, extremely slow growth of entanglement entropy, persistent revivals from certain initial states, to name a few.
In this talk, I introduce the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and demonstrate its total breakdown in quantum many-body localized systems and its partial breakdown in quantum many-body scars.
