Abstract: Mars is a popular planet for in situ science at the moment. Under consideration are aspects of habitability for microbial life and the search for martian life. I will talk about the missions under way, the NASA missions Mars Science Laboratory and its rover Curiosity, Mars 2020 with the Perseverance rover, and the European/Russian ExoMars (Trace Gas Orbiter 2016) and 2022 rover mission. Primarily I will discuss what life we might find on Mars using early terrestrial life as an analogue of martian life, highlighting the challenges ahead and the necessity of bringing samples back to Earth for definitive analysis in state-of-the-art laboratories.
