On December 5th Prof. Alex Huffman from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Denver will be giving a talk.

Title: Laser-induced fluorescence for rapid detection of single bioaerosols: Field measurements, analysis strategies, and improving instrumentation.

Abstract: Aerosols of biological origin, such as bacteria, fungal spores, and pollen, are relevant for
public health and may play an important role in the climate system, but their atmospheric
abundance, properties, and sources are not well understood. Many efforts over the last two
decades have improved techniques for bioaerosol detection. A portion of work in my
research group focuses on the use of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) techniques for real-
time analysis of aerosols. My talk for the interdisciplinary audience will give an overview
of several topics from our recent work: (i) Overview of our field observations using LIF
and molecular tracers broadly involving bioaerosols, including their relevance as
atmospheric ice nuclei and emissions after rainfall; (ii) Improvements in LIF analysis
techniques to allow more selective differentiation of bioaerosols from interfering material;
and (iii) A summary of our work to develop a (soon-to-be) handheld pollen and bioaerosol
sensor. (iv) At the end of the talk I will introduce a few slides introduce our recent work
on the chemical modification (nitration) that can take place on proteins in the atmosphere
(Amb a 1 from Ambrosia pollen) and in the human body (Lactoferrin) and how these may
affect human allergies and immune response.

We hope to see you all there!
