The prototype of the SONG telescope, the Hertzsprung SONG telescope, was placed at the Teide Observatory, Tenerife, in spring 2012, and the ‘first light’ through the telescope was observed in summer 2012. Since February 2014, the telescope has been operating as intended.

The site at the Observatorio del Teide, on the Izaña mountain, Tenerife was selected as a perfect location for the SONG prototype mainly due to the existing infrastructure (power and high speed internet), maintenance staff at site, good weather conditions and the fact that it is relatively close to Denmark.
