Abstract:

While sunspot numbers are typically used to characterize the solar variability throughout the past centuries, more
information on the solar cycle and dynamo is hidden in the positions and areas of sunspots. This talk will
scrutinize various observational records from which we can extract properties of sunspots and sunspot groups.
The sources extend our knowledge of the solar dynamo back to the telescopic discovery of sunspots in 1610.
