Statistical Physics

Our group studies few-body systems out of equilibrium. When brought into contact with two or more heat reservoirs, such systems can exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking, and, thus, directed transport. While the corresponding classical limit is indeed known to enable motor functionalities, much less is known in the quantum regime. Such quantum engines can potentially be realised with laser-cooled ions such that their theoretical study is of direct relevance to the experimental activities in the Center.
