GEANT4 simulations applied to the solution of practical inverse problems: The cases of TAS and PET

"Solution of an Inverse Problem entails determining unknown causes based on observation of their effects. This is in contrast to the corresponding direct problem, whose solution involves finding effects based on a complete description of their causes" (Prof. Oleg Mikailivitch Alifanov). In this talk I will introduce the Inverse Problem using very simple examples and one possible approximation to the solution: the Expectation-Maximization algorithm, based on a pure Bayesian approach. Later I will show you two representative examples of this problem/solution pair in fundamental and applied Nuclear Physics: the cases of TAS and PET, and how GEANT4 plays here a fundamental role to calculate the response function of our detection system which is the key to find a reasonably good solution of the problem.
