Gaia – A new eye on the galaxy

Christian Lundsgaard Sahlholdt

Vejleder: Brandon West Tingley

Torsdag den 14. april kl. 14.15

Fysisk Auditorium

Astrometry, the science of measuring the positions of stars, is an ancient branch of astronomy and one which is still very relevant today. Accurate stellar positions reveal the structure and evolution of our galaxy and are essential in determining intrinsic stellar properties.
Gaia was launched in 2013 and is the latest mission devoted to precision astrometry. By observing from space, away from the disturbances of the atmosphere, Gaia will reach an unprecedented accuracy in stellar positions and distances. With observations of about 109 objects the final data will be relevant in many fields of astronomy ranging from stellar and galactic evolution to fundamental science like general relativity. This year is an interesting one for the mission with the first intermediate data release being scheduled for this summer.
