Measurements of the Total Solar Irradiance are available only from the last 40 years, telling us about the solar activity and variability for only a short period of time. We can investigate the activity further back in time by looking at the Sunspot record, which extends 400 years back in time. But if we wish to study the solar variability further back in time, we need indirect proxies such as cosmogenic nuclides found in terrestrial archives; two such archives being tree rings and ice cores. This can give us more information about past variations in the solar activity, especially during times of unusual activity.
