Titel: Extreme Worlds - by associate professor Simon Albrecht

Tid: Friday 5. May 2017, 3.15 - 4.00 pm (coffee and cake from 3.05 pm)

Sted: Auditorium D1

Abstract:

Since the dawn of time humans have pondered if life exists elsewhere in the universe or only on Earth. This generation might be the first which will have an answer to this question, or at least detect worlds in other solar systems which should be habitable for life as we know it. Astronomers have discovered thousands of extra solar planets over the last 20 years. A few of these have been studied in detail and revealed extreme environments not known from the solar system's planets. In this talk I will give a very brief overview about the way we search and characterize extra solar planets. I will highlight some of the exciting results and open questions and finally give an outlook of what we might learn in the future.

About Simon Albrecht:

41 years old and associate professor at IFA. Originally from Germany and came to Aarhus from a position in the US. Moved to Denmark in 2014. Received the Sapere-Aude grant in 2015 for the research project "Spin-Orbit Alignment in Binary Star Systems”.

Hvad er fredagsforedrag?

The friday lectures are planned by students and are open for everyone. The goal of the lectures is first and foremost to give the students an insight to the research conducted at the institute, but also to inspire bachelor’s and master’s theses. The level of the lecture is set for students, that have finished their second year of physics or nanoscience. Students on the first and second year are of course still very welcome.
