What is artificial photosynthesis and can we learn to exploit the useful properties of the naturally occurring phenomena? In this seminar I will attempt to answer that question where my main focus will be on photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen production from water and sunlight.

The important process of water splitting will be covered from both a physical and chemical point of view though greatly simplified. Basic knowledge of photoelectrochemistry and semiconductor physics will be provided, leading to a discussion of the requirements and limitations of photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen production.

Concrete examples of recent photoelectrochemical cells will be presented, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

Lastly, points regarding where the technology are heading, and its potential impact on society will round up the colloquium.
