Pulsars

Mathias Bojsen-Hansen

Vejleder: Brandon West Tingley

Mandag den 18. april kl. 14.15
Fysisk Auditorium

In 1967 Jocelyn Bell noticed an unusual signal of pulses as she examined her radio astronomy observations. The pulses were extremely periodic for a celestial object to everyone’s great surprise, and even the idea of extraterrestrial life arose. These objects are known as pulsars and are among the most extreme type of stars with incredible rotation rates and strong magnetic fields. This colloquium will present how pulsars form, their emission mechanism, and a few proposed applications.
