Speaker: Erik Urban, University of Califonia, Berkeley, USA

Titel: Translationally Invariant Trapped Ion Rings

Abstract:

Typical linear ion trap designs have proven to be a fruitful platform for experimentation in the atomic physics community; however, the inherent properties of the linear construction can be limiting. Expanding trapped ion experiments to new configurations such as a symmetric ring geometry allow us to design classes of experiments that were previously very difficult to realize such as those requiring translational symmetry, periodic boundary conditions, and rotation. In this talk I will discuss our work designing, implementing, and characterizing a translationally invariant ion trap as well as our future plans to study quantum statistics of trapped ions and spontaneous symmetry breaking.
