Assistant Professor in Theoretical Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 919594

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University (www.phys.au.dk) invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in theoretical condensed matter and materials physics. The position is open from 1.11.2017.
The duration of employment is limited to 4 years. In the end of this period, there will be an opening for a permanent position as Associate Professor at the Department within the same academic area.

The position will be part of the VILLUM Centre of Excellence for Dirac Materials (www.villumcdm.org), with resources shared between Aarhus University and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stockholm (www.nordita.org).  The main mission of the centre is the prediction, realization and characterization of novel Dirac materials in a broad sense. To this end, the centre combines theoretical investigations in the group of Alexander Balatsky at Nordita and in the US, with a broad range of experimental tools spanning synthesis, structural characterization and electronic structure investigations in Aarhus and Nijmegen. The centre has an excellent experimental infrastructure, including state-of-the-art crystal synthesis, beamlines at the third generation synchrotron radiation source ASTRID2 in Aarhus and scanning tunneling microscopy at ultralow temperatures and high magnetic fields in Nijmegen.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the centre’s research and to establish a strong connection between the experimental and theoretical activities. A close interaction with the group of Alexander Balatsky is essential, including frequent exchange and extended stays.

The VILLUM Centre will not only fund the candidate’s salary but also initial running costs and a PhD scholarship.

An applicant should have a strong record of original scientific research at a high international level. He or she should document dynamic leadership and talent for the supervision of young researchers.  Abilities to promote collaborative research, especially with experimental groups, and to attract external funding are additional essential qualifications. Candidates must hold a PhD degree and should ideally have experience in university teaching.

Further information on the position can be obtained from the centre leader, Prof. Philip Hofmann (Philip@phys.au.dk), or from Prof. Alexander Balatsky (balatsky@hotmail.com).

The place of work is Ny Munkegade 120, 8000 Aarhus C and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.
