Assistant Professor at Stellar Astrophysics Centre in the fields of exoplanets, stellar astrophysics, and/or galactic archaeology 1002575

The Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Stellar Astrophysics Centre (SAC) at Aarhus University invite applications for a three-year position as Assistant Professor in the fields of exoplanets, stellar astrophysics, and/or galactic archaeology.

SAC is a world leader in the fields of asteroseismology, stellar structure and evolution, planetary systems, and galactic archaeology. The centre plays a prominent role in the use of data from the NASA Kepler/K2 and TESS missions, the ground-based SONG network for asteroseismic investigations, and large-scale stellar surveys such as APOGEE and Gaia. The goal of the centre is to ensure that full use is made of these possibilities to perform coherent studies of exoplanetary systems, their host stars, structure and evolution of stars, and composite stellar populations in the context of Galaxy formation and evolution.

Areas of work for the successful applicant may include:
Detection of planetary systems as well as detailed studies of exoplanet system architecture, and exoplanet atmospheres.
Detailed studies of stellar structure and evolution, including convection, mixing processes, and rotation using asteroseismic data.
Characterization of stellar populations for studies of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way
Instrumentation and data analysis, e.g. the SONG network for determining high-precision radial-velocities of stars and the Sun and space missions (e.g. TESS, Delphini-1).

The Assistant Professor is expected to pursue an independent research programme in connection with the research carried out by other members of SAC. SAC has established direct collaborations with research groups from the University of Birmingham, Leiden Observatory, MIT, MPA, MPIA, NASA Ames Space Center, and the University of Sydney, among others. There is an extensive exchange with our collaborators, with shorter and longer visits to, and by, them. The many visitors and the postdoc and PhD programme at SAC provide a vibrant working environment and we invite the successful applicant to be a part of this environment. SAC also has access to telescopes through the Danish membership of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT), as well as to space instruments though the Danish membership of ESA, and SAC plays an important role in the NASA Kepler and TESS missions

The successful candidate will be involved in teaching activities at both BSc and MSc level, including supervision of students in relation to project and thesis work. All teaching can be done in English.

Candidates for the position must have a PhD in astronomy or physics, or equivalent. The starting date is expected to be 1 April 2019, but the exact date is negotiable. The duration of the position is three years.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
